　「初めに、神は天地を創造された。」 Au commencement Dieu créa les cieux et la terre. この壮重な断言をもって、聖書1巻は始まります。イスラエル民族にとって、神は、天地の「創造主」 le Créateur であり、人間はじめ世のものみなは「被造物」 la créature にすぎぬものでした。
　「天地創造」 la Création du monde の物語は、まず光がつくられるところからはじめられます。

　「地は混沌であって、闇が深淵の面にあり、神の霊が水の面を動いていた。
　　神は言われた。『光あれ！』。こうして、光があった。」

　深い感動を与えるこの簡潔な一句は、ラテン語聖書（ ウルガータ Vulgate ）では、Fiat lux. と訳されます。このラテン語の一句はこのまま、創造活動の全体を示す語として用いられます。
　フランス語の「光」 la lumière は、「真」 la Vérité 、「善」 le Bien 、「幸福」 le Bonheur の象徴であって、「光を欲する」 vouloir la lumière とは、これらの精神的価値を求めることをいいます。
　ドイツの文豪ゲーテ Goethe が臨終間際に言ったとされる、「もっと光を！」 Mehr Licht ! ( ＝ Plus de lumière ! ）の一句が意味することが、これで、ご理解できたかと思います。
